Miscellaneous walks in May 2013
It's been a fabulous winter for snowshoers here in the Jura mountains, but now summer's here . . . or is it?
You may not find this terribly rewarding unless you're included here, so this is a good time for casual and random browsers to turn back before they get too caught up in the sweep and majesty of the proceedings and can't let go.
Pré de St-Livres in search of the last snow, 30 April 2013
We start at 1200m. It's tradition: by early- or mid-April the car can get partway up the Route des Montagnes in the Côte de Bière, and from there you have to walk up to the snow. (This year it's the end of April.)

The Glacière de St-Livres, so-called because, as with 3 or 4 other big holes in the area, there's permanent ice down there.

Well done. First mentioned in 1737, in the 19th and early 20th century the glacier was exploited for ice blocks to be transported to the breweries and hospitals of Lausanne and Geneva.

Up the hill to the Crêt de la Neuve (1494m), and . . .
. . . back down to the car.

The mouth of the Aubonne River, 31 May 2013
The Aubonne River is Kristin's favorite late-afternoon constitutional walk, even in the rain.
It's been a rough winter.
A lot of water coming down the Aubonne, but . . .
. . . it seems to have been higher, faster, and more destructive recently.
If the Aubonne had been navigable, it isn't anymore.
But it's probably a little bit wider than it was.
