Grindelwald and Rosenlaui, 2014
and views of the Eiger
Cathy and Oscar are in Europe, imbibing the views and ambience of northern France, and we've talked them into linking up with us in Switzerland before going home. Grindelwald has been suggested as a suitable venue.
You may not find this terribly rewarding unless you're included here, so this is a good time for casual and random browsers to turn back before they get too caught up in the sweep and majesty of the proceedings and can't let go.
But first, a 30 franc interlude in Gsteig (8 June 2014)
We're driving up to meet our friends in Grindelwald, by way of the scenic Simmental, and as we pass over the Col du Pillon to the village of Gsteig, we require a sandwich. Each.
The hotel Bären in Gsteig, just south of famous Gstaad, one of the most photographed and jigsaw-puzzled old buildings in the country, is out of parking, so we're hoofing it up the High Street.
Gsteig street scene
My annual running route in the 1980s and early '90s left from here, hurried a kilometre straight up there under the waterfalls to the Sanetschpass, and down to Sion in the canton of Valais (3:17:06 best).
The hotel Bären, and two lovely rustic sandwiches and a couple of coca-colas (30 francs = US$ 35)
The village church
We're on our way again, and . . .
. . . soon, by way of Zweisimmen, Spiez, and Interlaken to Grindelwald, we're checked into our hotel and waiting to meet Oscar and Cathy's train at the Grindelwald station.
