Winter 2015-2016

Retirement is still as much fun as ever

You may not find this terribly rewarding unless you're included here, so this is a good time for casual and random browsers to turn back before they get too caught up in the sweep and majesty of the proceedings and can't let go.

The Circuit de Plantour, Aigle/Ollon, Switzerland

Two little hikes in the neighborhood, late February 2016

That's the Plantour on the horizon, a 660m knob above Aigle in the Rhône valley, and the tiny hamlet of Verscheiz just a few kilometres up the road from Ollon. 27 February 2016.

Just past Verscheiz, we're walking down towards Aigle, along the Aigle-Diablerets mountain railway.

Halfway down the hill, we diverge onto a little path that leads round the front of the Plantour . . .

. . . and brings us out into the vineyards of Aigle. That's the Château d'Aigle.

The château from another angle -- we're walking past it towards the rail station downtown.

The front of the castle gate

It's presently housing a wine and wine-making museum.

Through the old castle district of Aigle -- over the years, the town's centre of gravity has been moving down towards the river since the advent of the train line in the mid-19th century.

Home by train, and the Squirrel is still guarding the apartment from cats that don't belong here.

The Circuit de Plantour

The same walk the next day, but this time the full circle

Our little path down round the front of the Plantour

At the intersection, instead of proceeding down to Aigle, we proceed up.

Walking uphill is warmer work than downhill

-- Wait up!

Rounding the corner

The view of lower Aigle from a nice little bellevue picnic stop

The valley of the Rhône near Aigle

Back down to Verschiez, and just 2km to home.
