Dispatches from way, way behind the lines in Switzerland

You may not find this terribly rewarding unless you're included here, so this is a good time for casual and random browsers to turn back before they get too caught up in the sweep and majesty of the proceedings and can't let go.

Stumbling through the forest with Dr Pirri

The forest of Grande Rolat is confusing at the best of times, and today Dr Pirri is leading. 22 December 2013.

Leading with confidence, in fact . . . but there's a stone wall.

No way!

The farm of Joux de Bière and the ski du fond piste passing nearby on the right

The family that cross-country skis together . . . (Mom pulls the kids, Dad watches for stragglers)

Now what?

An inhospitable forest

Dr Pirri provides welcome direction . . .

. . . but it's easy to get turned all round.

Another stone wall. Watch this!

It's been a while since we've seen any recognizable landmarks.

Whoops. Shake it off, and get back in the game.

Perhaps this way

It's fascinating terrain to walk in, but there's no "bigger picture" anymore.

Or perhaps this way

Just follow; we've got a plan. (We seem to be improvising.)

Nothing's familiar.

We're completely lost.

And with an equipment failure. But the ski du fond track is suggestive.

The farm of Sèche de Gimel. We know where we are now.

But it's very far from where we thought we were.

On the other side of the forest, in fact.

But that's okay.

Jump!

Time to go home.
