Scenes from northern Wisconsin, summer 2016
More annual lakeside fun in the Northwoods
You may not find this terribly rewarding unless you're included here, so this is a good time for casual and random browsers to turn back before they get too caught up in the sweep and majesty of the proceedings and can't let go.
Wecome back to the lake
Early July 2016, after hellish flights on United, we're back on the lake, back on the hydrobike, and setting out to survey the damage of recent storms.
Kristin and a tree in the lake
Inspecting a recent casualty
It's probably irremediable.
Now out to the central island in the lake, called 'Adjidaumo'
A congregation of storm-damage gawkers
In the little halfmoon bay on the northeastern side of the island, under the eagles' nest . . .
Rob and the vegetated reef off the northeastern end
Tag alder along the reef and around the shores, slowly dying back in recent years of high lake levels
Another tree casualty, or piece of a tree
On the farther shore, a lightning strike high in the tree exploded the thing as it traveled down the trunk.
The half-ton shard leaning off to the right has been blasted into the neighboring tree and stuck.
Back to the near shore
Now for some manmade tree removal
Turtles and frogs sunbathing on a log. Fake turtles and frogs, as it turns out. (Someone was moving them all around the lake throughout the summer.)
Farther along the lake, approaching George Island -- soliciting some free conservation advice from an expert . . .

This is the 19th century lumber industry's canal to the next lake, mostly impassable in recent years, but presently brimming.
Through the first half of the canal to the midway pond
Under the bridge: a beaver's dam blocking the canal
Pesky little critters
Back to the lake
And a late afternoon pedal home
