Winter 2008-2009

The best snow we've had in the Jura in a decade, but now it's going back to wherever it came from.

A walk in the woods

A few chores in the morning, a late start. We've got Dieter the VW as far up the La Bassine road as we can, and we'll just ramble about for a little while. 18 April 2009.

Stay!

You may not find this terribly rewarding unless you're included here, so this is a good time for casual and random browsers to turn back before they get too caught up in the sweep and majesty of the proceedings and can't let go.

A bunch of chamois near the farm of Le Crot, just above the forest of Les Indévis. We're downwind on a windy day, and we'll try to tiptoe closer.

They've seen us.

And they're a lot faster, not to say "boundier", too, than we are.

La Dôle and the Pointe de Poêle Chaud on the horizon

Le Crot, 1225m altitude.

Le Crot with La Dôle behind it. Into the forest we go now.

According to the map, that impediment is not meant to be there.

Onto the road from Le Vaud to Perroude du Vaud

This is a lovely "place d'accueil" that the commune of Le Vaud puts at the disposition of the public -- here's one of three campfire picnic places (the rack on the right will be filled with complimentary firewood when the road clears off from snow) at the place called Pré Rond (1330m), or round meadow. There's a similar picnic spot at the top of the ridge near the Perroude du Vaud, and a third one down below in the woods near the village.

Some leftover toblerones from the World War Two era -- these little tank-blockers are covering the passage over from the west (i.e., Vichy France) near the Perroude du Vaud.

Moss-covered toblerones

A lively debate amongst our party about whether to start back or not.

The ayes have it.

A high path, unmarked, runs all the way along under the cliffs that wall off the Le Planet pastures above.

The international hiking path the Chemin des Crête comes out onto the top of that cliff, with a little bench for trekkers to take a break for the view.

Early evening clouds bustling in
